Hair loss can occur for a number of reasons, but, celebrity hairstylist Luke Benson (@LukeBensonHair) explained that it doesn’t need to be “inevitable”. Speaking to Express.co.uk, Luke explained: “Every strand of hair on your head has a lifespan of between about three and five years.
“Hair follicles have a cycle of active growth, transition, and rest. Hair loss occurs when your hair’s growth cycle is disrupted.”
Luke, who has worked with star-studded clientele including Liam Payne, Roman Kemp, Lola Young, George Ezra, Mae Muller, Tom Grennan and Billie Eilish, explained how some simple lifestyle factors can play a huge role in supporting your hair’s health.
“Stress can be a huge contributor to a disrupted growth cycle,” he explained. “As can nutrition, sugar, alcohol, smoking, basically the body prioritises everything before your hair so that’s first to suffer when it comes to the distribution of nutrients.”
Scientific research suggests that significant emotional stress may be linked with a type of hair loss known as telogen effluvium. When this occurs, significant stress levels push a large number of hair follicles into a “resting phase”, according to experts from Mayo Clinic.

“Within a few months, affected hairs might fall out suddenly when simply combing or washing your hair,” they explained. However, even if your stress levels are under control, choices about what you consume can also have a knock-on effect when it comes to hair.
A 2020 study by the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology compared the prevalence of early-onset androgenetic alopecia in male smokers and nonsmokers between 20 to 35 years old. Androgenetic alopecia is also referred to as male-pattern baldness or female-pattern baldness.
The study found that 425 out of 500 smokers experienced some degree of hair loss while just 200 of 500 nonsmokers showed signs of hair loss. And while the occasional glass of wine won’t disturb your hair health, overindulging could have consequences.
