Styling hair in an iron-tight bun during a workout will keep it out of your face, but it can also put pressure on fragile strands, leading to breakages and, worst-case scenario, a sparse hairline.
If you think you might be looking a bit sparse up top, you’re not alone. According to a recent study by Philip Kingsley, 75% of women admitted to being concerned about hair loss or thinning. Whether it be due to stress or hormones, hair thinning is not a concern that’s exclusive to men.
A good hair growth serum can help rectify the problem. They’re formulated to promote growth and prevent breakages, to leave you with fuller and longer-looking hair. But while they’re hard-working, these serums aren’t miracle workers, so don’t expect to see a complete hair transformation overnight. And, as always, check in with your GP if your hair loss is becoming a greater concern.

We asked Consultant Dermatologist and Hair Specialist, Dr Sharon Wong, to explain why hair loss may occur. Dr Wong says:
‘Intermittent shedding can be due to underlying genetic hair loss, periods of time when sex hormones are in flux; e.g. stopping/changing/ starting contraceptive, hormone replacement therapy, dietary changes, stress or after pregnancy. Seasonal shedding can also play a part, as some people are sensitive to the number of daylight hours’.
Our diet (as always) is also an important factor:
‘Healthy hair growth also requires good nutritional support from the inside. Our follicles are highly metabolic mini-organs and use up a lot of energy. A well-balanced diet that includes the full spectrum of macro and micronutrients is the best and most sustainable way of supporting healthy hair growth (and a healthy body in general),’ says Dr Wong.
The Women’s Health Lab asked 285 people to try 19 hair growth serums for 8 weeks, to see if they really gave them longer, thicker hair.
Testers looked for any improvements in hair density, strengthening and regrowth, as well as monitoring any changes to their scalps.
The WH team also used a Hair Metrix machine in the lab to measure hair follicle regrowth with each serum.
Below are the best hair growth serums from our latest testing.
This vegan option from Monpure successfully improved both hair thickness and density in both our lab and panel tests. Not only was impressive regrowth recorded, but it also helped improve the general health of strands, reducing breakages and delivering a hit of hydration.
Smoother locks were also noted, with everyone seeing dandruff and dryness disappear from scalps. By the end of the trial, most said it helped solve or improve their hair loss issue, making it our worthy winner.

Excess sweat is a sign of a good workout but can cause some upset to your scalp – we’re talking itchiness and dryness. This treatment helped get scalps back on track, soothing any irritation and erasing dryness for our entire panel.
It didn’t leave anyone’s roots looking greasy either, with one tester saying their ‘hair fall significantly slowed down’ and that they could see baby hairs growing instead. An improvement in hydration, volume and strength was seen my most, too.

This serum was not only kind to our bank balance, but our strands too. Formulated with caffeine, we saw great results in our lab test for thickening, while it won our panel over for reducing shedding.
Everyone said their colour appeared more vibrant too, with most also saying hair looked healthier, with any dandruff banished. Not bad for under £15.

This handy spray helps you cover your hair with ease and did wonders for improving both hair thickness and density in a matter of weeks.
Hair looked and felt stronger and healthier, with one tester seeing regrowth results in as little as two weeks (that’s like the Flo-Jo of hair growth treatments). It smells great too – thanks to the blend of natural oils – and left many seeing improvements in their hair loss issues by the end of the eight weeks.

Irritated scalps can often be a sign of dehydration. This serum aims to combat the problem by adding a hit of hydration to help encourage hair regrowth.
Thanks to its ginger root and Aminexil (a go-to hair loss treatment ingredient for L’Oreal) blend, it relieved scalps of dryness, effectively getting rid of dandruff for all. As for our hair, it left smoother, shinier strands behind, with fewer breakages and thicker roots.
